Participation in arts activities improves the health and well-being of elders. Cantonese opera is not only a hobby from the past, but a collective cultural memory for elders in Hong Kong.

The programme offers an opportunity for elders and their family members to spend quality time together through attending a Cantonese opera performance plus engaging in an interactive arts experience on Cantonese opera. Elders are given a platform to share their experiences and pass on their knowledge of Cantonese opera to their children and even grandchildren.

Project components

The Xiqu programme comprises of:

  • 24 Xiqu handicraft workshops; and
  • 4 performances at the Tea House Theatre.
  • 240 elders and 240 family caregivers will enjoy the handicraft workshop and the Chinese opera performance.

Impact

  • Foster family relationships, enhance communication and understanding among different generations through tailored activities;
  • Foster a sense of belonging and confidence for the elders by sharing their knowledge on Chinese opera; and
  • Provide opportunities to develop social connections with other elders and carers
