Installation of Hoists in Elderly Homes

Partnering Organizations

5 NGOs – Caritas-Hong Kong, Christian Family Service Centre, Helping Hand, St. James’ Settlement and The Salvation Army (Co-funded with Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation and Lee Hysan Foundation)

Project Period

Dec 2018 to June 2021

Target Group

Frail elders and care workers in 23 subsidised elderly homes managed by the 5 NGOs

Location

Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories

About the project

The ceiling hoist is an overhead lifting system that can efficiently transfer frail elders with limited mobility from bed to bath trolley/wheelchair. With automatic lifting, elders can be safely and comfortably raised, lowered, turned and traversed with ease and manual heavy lifting by care workers is minimised to enhance occupational safety.

This project will install 54 hoists in 23 elderly homes.

Impact

Quantitative and qualitative data will be collected to examine the effectiveness, receptiveness and satisfaction of users/family members and care staff.  Data will also be gathered on occupational safety or reduction of the risk of staff injury/physical strain.

Goals

  • Improve quality of life for frail elders
  • Improve health care efficiency
  • Improve safety of care workers
