About the project

Big Silver is a social enterprise which seeks to mobilise society to continuously innovate, experiment on and refine solutions related to ageing through solutions journalism. It has launched Hong Kong’s first lifestyle magazine targeting the silver community, will facilitate building up a physical community network through direct selling and will equip readers to pursue meaningful causes that will in turn create social capital in dealing with the ageing population in Hong Kong.

How it works

Big Mag Publication

Big Mag, the monthly lifestyle magazine will be published to cover topics relevant to the silver community such as health, lifestyle, and ageing with a soft and easy approach. It will serve as platform where service providers (e.g. NGOs, hospitals) and end-users find each other and help achieve better utilisation of our resources.

Big Silver Team

A distribution team of “young-olds” will be built up, who will be educated and updated on issues related to ageing. This Big Silver team will sell the magazine for profit that can be a source of income and provides an emotional safety net within their community.

Thematic Topics

The Big Silver team will host and provide support for the development of innovative solutions to ageing. Magazine coverage will facilitate the expansion of success stories so as to multiply the impact to a wider community


  • A better awareness and concern among the general public for issues surrounding ageing, illness and dying, as more and more prepare to experience these realities, or care for loved ones.
  • Young-olds, seniors and carers to benefit from new and positive perspectives and possibilities associated with ageing.
  • To be a platform for service providers (e.g. NGOs and medical /health organisations) and end-users to find each other and make better use of society’s resources on related issues.
  • Caring professionals will benefit from enhanced public knowledge and can share their views on related topics.
  • To be a platform for the commercial sector and consumers to find each other, anticipating more innovative products and solutions emerging for elders, patients and carers.
  • In the long run, Big Silver seeks to envision our society to be well-educated and prepared for ageing, with innovative solutions to overcome foreseeable challenges.

Project components

  • 21 publications of 178,300 copies of Big Mag magazine to reach 712,000 target readers
  • 80-240 core members from all over Hong Kong to be recruited to join the Big Silver Team
  • 3 community education campaigns will be launched to encourage public engagement and awareness of ageing issues
  • 7 concern groups will be set up to discuss thematic topics, some targeting the Big Silver Team, some for the wider community
