Art as an Intervention in Serving Secondary Child Victims of Family Violence 2015

Partnering Organization

Lingnan University and Family and Child Protective Services Unit (Tuen Mun)

Project Period

Aug 2015 to July 2016

Location

Tuen Mun

Participants

Twenty to thirty secondary child victims of family violence

The Project

The project makes use of the arts to provide a joyful, self-directed and safe platform for secondary child victims of family violence to release their inner feelings through creative activity, facilitate effective counseling, and promote developmental growth.

How it Works

By adopting a child-centred, psycho-educational approach, the project comprises two series of 20-session group creativity workshops. There will also be separate sessions specially designed for parents to understand children’s development needs. “Train-the-trainers” seminars on art facilitation will be conducted to train social workers. All workshops will be conducted by a professional art therapist with years of experience working with children suffering from family violence.

Dr Sophia Law from the Lingnan University will employ the methodology of Action Research and Art Therapy to study the efficacy of using the arts in social services for secondary child victims of family violence.
