Stay Connected for Elders Living in Private Nursing Homes

Stay Connected for Elders Living in Private Nursing Homes

Partnering Organization

Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service (BOKSS)

Project Period

Sep 2020 to Aug 2021

Target Group

Elders and their family members

10 private nursing homes in New Territories East

How it works

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on elders who are living in nursing homes. As a measure to control the spread of Covid-19, nursing homes have adopted a no-visiting practice intermittently since Jan 2020, and more stringent measures starting from mid-July 2020 when there
was a surge of infections in more than ten nursing homes. As a result, elders have been isolated due to limited communication with their families.

Through the outreaching services of BOKSS to private nursing homes in New Territories East, the project will help the elderly residents stay connected with their families and friends through the installation of Wi-Fi and tablets.

Project components

  • Video communications for 400-500 elders and their family members;
  • Online activities;
  • Online therapeutic training;
  • Training sessions to staff, family members and volunteers;
  • Training manual.

  1. To connect elderly residents in private nursing homes with their family members so that they will not feel isolated;
  2. To train up volunteers to support elders’ family members in using video communication;
  3. To train up care staff in using technology for service delivery;
  4. To enhance capacity of care home staff in IT;
  5. The Multi-disciplinary Outreaching Support Teams for the Elderly (MOSTE) team of BOKSS will make use of the tablets for conducting activities and therapies.
